The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay technology.
Replay systems will make its debut at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.
Players will gain the option to challenge specific rulings from the chair umpire, following the protocol already in use at both the US Open and the Aussie major.
The new system will be accessible on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles matches.
This move comes just a year after the AELTC rolled out electronic line calling, which effectively ended the 147-year tradition of line judges.
What Can Be Reviewed?
Players cannot to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the official to review specific situations, such as:
- Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
- If a shot touched an rival's racket or person during play.
- Possible interference end of a point.
Importantly, there will be an unlimited number on the amount of reviews a competitor can request.
Case in Point
An illustrative case took place in a recent tournament recently, where a top player used the review system against his opponent.
The British player admitted it was a tough call for the official, but thought his rival had "played the rules effectively."
The umpire watched a replay and determined the player was responsible for interference, granting the point to Medvedev.
Wider Implementation
Video reviews aren't new for major tournaments. The system was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.
Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews in place at every one of its tournaments.
Further Updates
Another change at Wimbledon 2025 involves the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the ELC system.
This solves situations where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain whether a shot was out or in.
In other news, with exactly 100 days to go until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have also announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
