EU Could Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says

The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the United States against five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as the French president charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted figures who have been at the heart of efforts to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the move.

The restrictions were imposed this week against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities contend the regulations are essential to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and European institutions.

  • The nation of Palau will consent to take in dozens of individuals from the US in return for additional aid, after signing a memorandum of understanding with US authorities.

Furthermore, a congressional representative has filed a lawsuit to demand the removal of a political figure’s name from a prominent cultural institution in the capital.

Experts have also noted that recent statements regarding Venezuelan oil align with a broader belief in some quarters of “economic expansionism”, leading to parallels with historical international strategies.
